Testing requirements and compliance analysis for child-resistant packaging

Oct 14 , 2024

With the increasing concern about child safety, the application of child-resistant packaging is becoming more and more common. In order to protect children under 5 years old from potential dangers, the packaging must have a complex opening mechanism while ensuring that adults over 70 years old can open it easily when needed. This article will introduce the testing requirements and compliance standards for child-resistant packaging in detail.

Introduction to the production process of medicinal CRC caps

Basic requirements for packaging design

The design of child-resistant packaging must take into account both safety and accessibility. Not only must the packaging prevent children from opening it easily, but it must also be able to protect the drug from external factors such as moisture, oxygen and light. This means that the choice of materials and the complexity of the closure mechanism are crucial in the design process.

1. Characteristics of child-resistant packaging

Child-resistant packaging usually increases the difficulty of opening through the special design of the lid to prevent children from opening it at will. The closure mechanism needs to be complex enough to make it difficult for children under 5 years old to open. At the same time, in order to avoid inconvenience to the elderly, the opening method of the packaging must also be simple and easy to understand.

2. Testing process

The compliance test was conducted under the supervision of children and adults, and the testing process included the following stages:

Children's test

Preliminary test: Children (aged between 42 and 51 months) had 10 minutes to try to open the package without any guidance.

Demonstration phase: If the child failed to successfully open the package in the initial test, an unsealing demonstration was conducted, and the child was given another 5-minute retry opportunity.

Compliance standard: If at least 85% of the children failed to open the package within the initial 5 minutes, and at least 80% of the children still could not open the package within 5 minutes after the demonstration, the package was considered compliant.

Adult test

To ensure that the elderly can use the package smoothly, the test also includes an assessment of adults aged 50 to 70:

Preliminary test: Participants have 5 minutes to try to open the package in the first stage. If successful, they will enter the second stage.

Closing test: In the second stage, participants will be given another package and must close it within 1 minute.

Compliance Standard: If at least 90% of adults (even with guidance) can successfully open the package within 5 minutes in the first stage, and can close the package within 1 minute in the closing test, the package is considered compliant.

The testing requirements for child-resistant packaging emphasize the balance between protecting children's safety and ensuring adult accessibility. This test focuses not only on the difficulty of children opening the package, but also on the user experience of adults. Through strict compliance standards, manufacturers can ensure that their products will not cause trouble to older people while ensuring the safety of children. For parents and guardians, choosing child-resistant packaging that meets these standards will improve children's safety and enhance the protection of drugs.
